Filed survey of the pottery workshop at Plemićy bay (Rtina, Ražanac)

Plemići bay

Project RED team members G. Lipovac Vrkljan, M. Ilkić and A. Konestra surveyed the site at Plemići bay where the existence of a Roman pottery workshop has been suggested by previous research. The recently undertaken survey has confirmed the supposition of a larger pottery kiln being active at the site, producing an array of objects spanning from ceramic build materials to amphorae. In addition to defining more precisely the character of the site, the team has collected samples of pottery, kiln’s structure fragments and other wasters, in addition to clay samples.
Judging on the larger area covered by the site and on the data gathered by previous under water surveys (M. Ilkić, M. Parica), it can be supposed that this larger production complex had its own harbor structures, while ancient walls identified on the northern shores of the bay could be linked to a rural residence, probably adjoining the figlina.
