Visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Aquileia (Italy) and the exhibition “Into the sea of intimacy” in Trieste

Several project RED’s research group memebers visited Aqiuleia and Trieste on February 8th and 9th 2018. The visit to the National Archaeological Museum in Aquileia was organised in order to detect several uncertain amphorae types and define their possible provenience. Among the huge ammounts of finds from urban sites of ancient Aquileia, in particular from Canale Amfora, the presence of several fragments whose morphology and fabrics indicate a possible connection with Crikvenica’s local production of Adriatic flat-bottom amphorae – Crikvenica type 1 has been detected. For further scientific processing a collaboration on archaeometric analysis, to be carried out within project RED, has been agreed with the Museum.

After Aquileia, the exhibition “Into the sea of intimacy. Underwater archaeology tells the story of the Adriatic sea” has been visited at Trieste. Within the exhibits, which tell the story of the relationship of the two Adriatic coasts, a wide repertoire of amphorae is presented, relevant for comparative analysis of local eastern adriatic productions.
